The Small Greenhouse

After seeing Cathy's post over at Morning Musings, full of all the lovely little things she has collected I thought I would show you my tiny greenhouse.

My mom built it for me many years ago and it's one of my very favorite things. I grew up playing with two wonderful dollhouses that my grandmother made for my sister and I. I always found great satisfaction in taking everything out of it and putting it back in a new arrangement. I've rearranged this one a few times too. Hey, it needs dusting out every now and then, it's not like I'm a child ;-).

Adding to it over the years has been a lot of fun. Some of the plants I made myself and some of the plants as well as furniture and other little items I purchased from very talented artists. Miniaturists really are artists.

These charming flowers with faces were picked up over 15 years ago on a trip to London that I took with my mom and sister. I've heard the shop has closed since then, but they are my favorite things in the greenhouse.

Everyone should own a Chia Pet, even very small imaginary people.

My mom also made this little table. She is amazing.

Here are some more goodies...

Some exterior details...

Here are two other purchases that I love. They are both signed on the bottom by the artists and I'm amazed at the detail! I really heart these.

Thanks for visiting the greenhouse! Maybe next time you could help water?

  1. Shelly, your greenhouse is AMAZING! I had no idea when you told me about it. I will post a link to this on my Blog when I announce the winner to Tasha Tudor's book. Do you know the scale? Does your mother still make miniatures? I'd love to have a full-size greenhouse that looks like this! Where do you display it in your house? You've whetted my appetite to do something like this with the miniature greenhouse I have. Mine is meant to hold plants and only opens from the top, but I can deal with that. Thanks for posting your photos!

  2. Thanks Cathy! This one is 1" scale and it sits in the room that my husband calls my "get ready room". It's my dressing room/ guest room/ sewing room/ ironing and laundry sorting room that I also do my makeup and hair in. It's a room that is a catch-all. I've got plans for the room to be used more properly but our house is tiny and everything just sort of ends up in there right now. We're getting ready to turn our "computer room" into a guest room since we no longer use a computer in there. Many changes that I hope to blog about as I go. I have displayed the greenhouse on my dining room table as the centerpiece but I think it will soon go to the dining room and perch on top of the piano. My mom does still do miniatures, as a matter of fact I think she is getting ready to do a big exhibit with her miniature club in Indianapolis at the Garfield Park Arts Center. I called her this morning and asked her to do a post about her Mary Cassatt Porch on her blog. It's http://madamesewsalot.blogspot.com/. She has a few posts over there about her miniatures. I told her I think she should do more miniature posts! ;-) I hope you will share your miniature greenhouse if you decide to add to it! Getting into it from the top would be ideal. Mine has a clear glass wall the is on the back, it slides in and out of a groove then a strip of moulding goes over the edge. It makes it easy to get into without having to open the doors. Thanks for adding the link!

  3. Wow. Wow. and Wow! This is just over the top with fine detail; I LOVE it! My husband built the log cabin dollhouse that Cathy is sharing today on her blog, so I'm well aware of the man-hours involved in crafting these miniature creations. He also built me a 'real' greenhouse, and I had such good times 'playing' inside it. Thank you for sharing this; I will revisit, and check out your mother's blog as well.

    1. Thank you Martha! I would love a full scale one as well! I keep thinking one of these days I am going to get a small starter greenhouse. I've seen few nice ones in the gardeners supply catalogue. Of course if I were wealthy I would build my little one in full scale! ;-)

  5. Oh, Shelly! Your greenhouse is beautiful! I was trying to pick what I liked best about it and it was just too hard...I will say that the Chia pet in the sink made me smile the most! All of the little flowers were lovely. I enjoyed my "visit" to your garden room. ~ Donna

    1. I'm so glad you came by to visit Donna! I would love to add more little flowers, but I'm afraid I'm running out of room. They are as addictive as real flowers. :-)

  6. Shelly, this is exquisite! Your mother is a very talented artist. I think I would need to "dust" it often if it was mine :)
